Christ’s sacrifice fully satisfied the righteous demands of the justice of
God, and His offering of Himself was sufficient “for the sins of the whole
world”. But it is only applied to you when you surrender and call upon Him
for the forgiveness of your sin. This is evidence that you truly believe.
Those who ask to be “forgiven” but have no intention or desire to be
changed in the direction of obedience to the moral Law of God, as revealed
in His Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount, are not seeking the Lord
and true Biblical forgiveness. They are asking to be excused, not forgiven
and cleansed, only exempted from payment. They lack what our Catholic
friends call “a purpose of amendment”.
Upon repentance you have turned your heart to the Lord. In prayer
you asked Him to be your Savior. Having done this you have the right to
believe God is true to His Word and grants you His promised Spirit and
eternal life.
“These things have I written unto you who believe on the
name of the Son of God: that you may know that you have
eternal life.” I John 5:13
The fearful truth is that those who refuse Christ’s gracious
invitation remain, by their own choice, under “the wrath of God”.
This divine “wrath” is not some emotional rage from heaven. The
clear New Testament disclosure of the nature of God presented in and through
Jesus Christ is not one of a furious, ill-tempered, angry Being. Even the
Old Testament, when properly understood shows the God of Israel
broken-hearted over the sin and suffering of His wayward people.
The Greek word used by New Testament writers for Divine “wrath”
denotes God’s fixed attitude and just commitment against sin and evil. This
flows from the Creator’s perfect righteousness and His great unfailing love
for His creatures and His creation. Because of God’s holy love for His
creation and His people, He is committed to destroy that which would destroy
them, and which by its very nature would destroy all that is good.
The most evil of individuals can be forgiven, cleansed, and be made
to learn righteousness. But intrinsic evil cannot be made good; it must be
destroyed; just as cancer cells, infectious bacteria, and destructive
viruses.
The judgment of God allows stubborn evil to run its course to its
own deserved end. As the law of cause and effect operates in the natural
order, there is a “built-in” principle of moral and spiritual “sowing and
reaping”.
In the words of Fredrick Von Logau:
“Though the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind
exceeding small; Though with patience He
stands waiting, With exactness grinds He all.”
The judicial effect of this holy wrath, programmed into the
existence of rebellious man and his godless systems, begins with a reflexive
inward darkness, an inherent spiritual blindness which permits the rejecter
to “go on still in his trespasses”, and reap his just reward.
This self-determined condition is the ultimate existential tragedy.
But in spite of his spiritually desolate state, although he cannot attain a
moral level or quality of righteousness worthy of God’s favor, man has been
given the ability to see and recognize right from wrong, and thus he remains
accountable for his life-choices.
“For when the nations, which have not the law, do by nature the
things contained in the law, these having not the law, are a law unto
themselves: which show the work of the law written in their hearts,
their reasoning meanwhile accusing or excusing them”. Romans 2: 14, 15
Jesus challenged the religious leaders of His day.
“Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is
right?” Luke 12:57
Even the imperfect justice we observe in this world reveals the
reality of the concept. There is such a thing; longed for but often
illusive.
We assess injustice by its approximation to what we conceive as true
justice. Every culture, people and nation bears witness to the presence of a
“judicial sentiment” programmed into the human mind and heart. Even little
children know when “it isn’t fair!”
If there is no justice beyond this life, no righting of the massive
wrongs of sin-sick humankind, then life and human existence are indeed
valueless and absurd. And some actually prefer to believe in a valueless and
absurd existence in the vain hope of avoiding the coming judgment of God. Is
it not a deadly delusion to convince ourselves, ( and each other), that the
One revealed in Scripture as “the Judge of all earth” will not call every
person to give an account of himself and “be recompensed for his deeds done
in the body, according to what he has done, whether it be good or bad”?
However literal or long hell may or may not be, the truth of God’s
Word is clear, for those who refuse His gracious offer of salvation:
“The Son of man shall come in the glory of His Father with His
angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works”.
Matthew 16:27
“Every transgression and disobedience receives its just recompense
of reward”. Hebrews 2:2
Dear reader, if there is any doubt in your mind on this matter, you
must call upon the Lord in prayer; specifically asking Him for His
forgiveness and salvation, with a willingness to allow Him to begin His
process of transforming your desires and cleansing your life.
The prayer of surrender is the initial evidence of true repentance
and saving faith. At this point there may be little or no ability to do His
will, but His Spirit will begin to empower you. And though God’s gift of
forgiveness is free, and He accepts you as you are, it will be followed by
His progressive, lifelong work of moral and spiritual transformation.
If you feel resistant to this change, you desperately need to ask
God to show you the enormity and deformity of your sin lest it harden your
heart eternally.
For some, conversion may bring areas of sudden and dramatic change,
for others a more gradual process. But for all, the proof of eternal life is
spiritual growth. If there is no noticeable spiritual and moral improvement;
no new interest in God’s Word or meaningful prayer, there must be a reality
check.
