From the Pastor – Summer 2011

Many people (including too many church members) believe there is a God, but
go no further. They seem content to have an “idea” of God. But Scripture,
throughout, teaches that God has provided a way man can have a personal
relationship with Him. If one is willing to “seek the Lord”, a prayerful
reading of the New Testament Gospels can reveal the wonder of actually
knowing God, His love, forgiveness, and spiritual power, with a certainty of
His full acceptance and a heart assurance of eternal life. I John 5:13.
When it comes to eternal salvation, theories about God are no better
than no belief in Gog.
Because, clearly, there remains an “infinite qualitative
distinction” between theoretically derived ideas of God and the living
Self-communicating God of Biblical revelation.
In the words of Pascal:
“God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob
not of philosophers and scholars. God of Jesus Christ.
He can only be found by the ways taught in the Gospels.”
New Testament Scripture is the only reliable source of our knowledge
of the truth concerning the Father-God in Jesus Christ. It is only as we
begin to realize the truth of His Word and redemptive work that the heart is
drawn to the Savior and faith can be received.
The consistent witness of Scripture is that man does not possess the
natural ability to discover the truth about God.
Hundreds of years before Christ, Job was asked by Zophar:
“Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out
the Almighty
unto perfection?”
Those who have accepted the inspired record of God’s revelation;
especially “.all that Jesus began both to do and to teach”, Acts 1:1, cannot
but echo the words of 17th century philosopher John Locke.
“The Bible is one of the greatest blessings bestowed by God
on the children of men. – It has God for its
author; salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture
for its matter. – It is all pure, all sincere; nothing too much;
nothing wanting.”

“Seek ye the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is
near.”

Isaiah 55:6
